Honda CR-V Vs. Ford Escape

By Justin Cupler | April 8th, 2019

The 2019 Honda CR-V and 2019 Nissan Rogue offer our Rochester area crossover shoppers plenty of room packed inside small footprints. This makes it easy to haul the entire family or all your friends around town without struggle with a massive SUV. Which crossover is better for you? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Honda CR-V went through a redesign in 2017 that ushered in a more adult look. This redesign included a flatter nose, a bolder grille with large chrome accent, and tons more. This resulted in the CR-V becoming one of the more modern crossovers available, and it remains that way in 2019.

The Ford Escape’s last redesign came way back in 2013, but it received a freshening up in 2017. This updated look gave the Escape new front and rear fascias and new headlights. On the outside, the 2019 Ford Escape is about as traditional as you can get for a crossover, so some may find it too timid.

In terms of size, the 2019 Honda CR-V is longer and wider than the 2019 Escape, but the Ford is taller and rides on a longer wheelbase.

Measurement 2019 Honda CR-V 2019 Ford Escape Difference
Length 180.6 inches 178.1 inches +2.5 inches
Width 73 inches 72.4 inches +0.6 inches

Curb weight 3,307 to 3,397 pounds 3,542 to 3,755 pounds -358 to -235 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • More refined looks
  • Most recent small-crossover design
  • More max ground clearance

Advantage: 2019 Ford Escape

  • Wheels closer to the corners

Interior

The 2019 Honda CR-V’s cabin varies greatly between trim levels, as its base LX trim is simple and utilitarian, but the EX-L and Touring trims feel downright luxurious with their premium materials and desirable features. In every trim, the CR-V’s cabin offers plenty of quietness and loads of comfort.

The 2019 Ford Escape’s interior shows its age, as it has seen no big changes since 2013. Particularly outdated is its dashboard, which includes a recessed touchscreen and plenty of hard plastics to turn off your fingertips. Also, its standard 4.2-inch LCD screen in the center stack looks like it belongs in the early 2000s. On the flip-side, though, the SE and higher trims get an advanced 8-inch SYNC 3 system with all the latest tech, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Wi-Fi.

Interior room is split between the Escape and CR-V, as the Escape’s front seats are roomier, but the CR-V’s rear seats offer more space where it really matters.

Performance

Small crossovers and performance don’t mix well, and the 2019 CR-V and 2019 Escape fall right in line with the majority of the class. The Escape rolls in with a standard 168-horsepower 2.5-liter engine that gets it to 60 mph in a leisurely 9.1 seconds. Its optional 177-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter engine makes it even slower at 9.6 seconds. The range-topping 245-horsepower 2.0-liter engine makes the Escape more bearable with its 7.3-second 0-to-60 sprint.

The CR-V has a pair of engine options, including a standard 184-horsepower 2.4-liter and an optional 190-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. With the base engine, the CR-V hits 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, while the more accessible torque of the turbocharged 1.5-liter drops the sprint time to 7.6 seconds.

Towing is where the Escape dominates as it can tug up to a 3,500-pound trailer with the 2.0-liter engine and the Tow Package. The CR-V can only tow up to 1,500 pounds, but it comes back with huge fuel economy advantages.
