2020 Honda CR-V Vs. 2020 Toyota RAV4

By Justin Cupler | July 29th, 2020

The crossover space is one of the most competitive segments in the automotive industry, as virtually every automaker offers several options to fit various needs. Toyota and Honda have been in this space since its earliest years with the RAV4 and CR-V, respectively. These legends of the crossover segment remain dominant forces today, but which is better for our Rochester area shoppers? Find out below.

Exterior

On the outside, the 2020 Honda CR-V and 2020 Toyota RAV4 have two of the freshest designs in the crossover space.

The 2020 CR-V has a new look thanks to its refresh that brought in new front and rear designs that include updated bumpers, grille, and headlights. There are also new wheels on select trims and three new exterior color options.

The 2020 Honda CR-V’s looks are more grown-up and refined compared to many in its class, which shows who its target market is. This polished look starts from the base LX model and runs through the range-topping Touring model, giving buyers of all levels a great-looking crossover.

The Toyota RAV4 was all-new for 2019 and brought in a rugged-looking design that looked ripped straight from a body-on-frame SUV of years past, albeit modernized for today. This new look includes a long, flat hood, an upright grille, aggressive overfenders, sharp body lines, and an optional contrasting roof.

On top of this slick design, Toyota also offers two rugged off-road models that push this design to an area crossovers tend to avoid. The Adventure model adds exclusive wheels, all-terrain tires, a higher ride height, and more. The TRD Off-Road model builds upon the Adventure with its upgraded suspension, unique wheels and tires, red coil springs, dark gray highlights, standard LED fog lights, and more.

On the outside, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 comes decently equipped with standard 17-inch steel wheels with hubcaps, multi-LED headlights with black bezels, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, a black, hexagon-patterned grille, a color-keyed front upper bumper, power outside mirrors, color-keyed outside door handles, low-profile black-painted roof rails, an integrated rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, and more.

The 2020 CR-V misses out on the standard LED headlights and taillights, but it does offer LED daytime running light, 17-inch alloy wheels, and active grille shutters. Plus, this all comes at a lower price.

  •       Standard LED lighting all around

Advantage: 2020 Honda CR-V

  •       Mature design

  •       Lower ride height makes it easier to step into

Interior

Inside, the rugged design of the RAV4’s exterior continues with its straight-line dashboard with limited swoops or changes in direction, a stubby sear shifter, chunky HVAC knobs, and more. The RAV4 also has an innovative side with its large storage trays under both sides of the dash, a floating infotainment screen, and premium materials in higher trims.

Stepping into the RAV4 Adventure or TRD Off-Road brings in more ruggedness, including contrast stitching and accents, a terrain-selector knob, and more.

The CR-V’s interior is far more traditional with some shapeliness to the dash, more carlike knobs and buttons, and more. The 2020 redesign does little on the inside, but it does add a cleaner center stack, more accessible USB ports, and better in-cabin storage.

When talking roominess, the CR-V wins in most front-seat measurements, but the RAV4 wins most rear-seat comparisons. In cargo hauling, the CR-V wins with the seats up or down, except in the touring model, which ties the RAV4 with its seats folded.

In terms of standard features, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 offers tons, including soft-touch dash with stitched accents, power windows with one-touch up/down in all positions, power door locks, one USB media port in front storage tray, the Entune Audio infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, SiriusXM®, In-car Wi-Fi®, and more.

The RAV4 also has a plethora of standard safety features, including automatic high-beam headlights, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, automatic high-beam headlights, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and road-sign recognition.

The CR-V’s base LX trim is a little simpler with its lack of Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®, and standard 5-inch non-touchscreen infotainment system and four-speaker audio system. It does, however, match the RAV4 in safety gear with its standard multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Performance

Under their respective hoods, these models each have on engine option. The RAV4 does have a hybrid model, and the CR-V has a hybrid on the way. We will look at those in separate reviews once the CR-V Hybrid’s official details arrive.

The Toyota RAV4 comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This duo delivers 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, which zips it to 60 mph in eight seconds and delivers up to 30 mpg combined. As standard, power heads to only the front wheels, but all-wheel drive is available.

The 2020 CR-V boasts a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission with sport mode and ships power to the front wheels or all four. This powertrain results in a 7.5-second 60 mph sprint and up to 30 mpg combined*.

Towing falls into the RAV4’s category with the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models capable of tugging a 3,500-pound trailer. All other RAV4 models fall in line with the CR-V’s 1,500-pound capacity.

Where the RAV4 separates itself from most other crossovers in its class is its off-road prowess in the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models. No, you won’t be crawling rocks any time soon, but it offers 8.6 inches of ground clearance, a terrain-selection knob, hill-descent control, and more to make moderate off-roading a blast.
