Honda HR-V Vs. Subaru Crosstrek

By Justin Cupler | March 23rd, 2019

Small crossovers like the 2019 Honda HR-V and 2019 Subaru Crosstrek offer buyers great comfort and drivability with added capabilities sedans cannot deliver, like off-road abilities. Which of these small crossovers is better for you, the HR-V or Crosstrek? Find out below.

The 2019 Honda HR-V features your typical small-crossover design mixed with a bit of hatchback. While it was once quite unique in its younger years, the Honda CR-V has become the norm in this segment. Each year as new, more extreme compact-crossover designs debut, the HR-V becomes less and less unique. While some may find it a touch boring, this mainstream look plays into the desires of the masses.

The Subaru Crosstrek went through a redesign in 2018. Like most redesigns from the automaker, it was more of an evolution on the previous generation. That said, the Crosstrek has always boasted a unique mixture of SUV, hatchback, and wagon that has made it stand out to off-roaders and families alike. And with its SUV-like 8.7 inches of ground clearance, off the beaten path has a new meaning in the 2019 Crosstrek.

In terms of size, the HR-V is significantly shorter, lower, and narrower than the Crosstrek.

Measurement 2019 Honda HR-V 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Difference
Length 170.4 inches 175.8 inches -5.4 inches
Width 69.8 inches 71 inches -1.2 inches
Height 63.2 inches 63.6 inches -0.4 inches
Wheelbase 102.8 inches 104.9 inches -2.1 inches
Ground Clearance 6.7 to 7.3 inches 8.7 inches -1.4 to -2 inches
Curb weight 2,906 to 3,150 pounds 3,113 to 3,239 pounds -89 to -207 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda HR-V

  • Toned down styling (relatively)
  • Smaller footprint

Advantage: 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

  • Unique look
  • Huge ground clearance

Inside, the 2019 Honda HR-V continues with its traditional styling. The HR-V manages to set itself apart from others is its long climate-control vent on the passenger’s side its unique Magic Seat second row that unlocks up to 58.8 cubic feet of cargo room — 3.5 cubes more than the Crosstrek.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek’s interior is not too wild, but it has more character with its large infotainment bezel, vertical air vent, angled lines, and colored dash insert. It also features sporty-looking seats that look amazing with the two-tone leather.

In terms of features, the Honda HR-V has loads of premium options like a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and more. The Crosstrek, however, has more of these premium tech features as standard equipment, including a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Because the Subaru Crosstrek is so much larger, it beats the HR-V in most of its interior measurements. Some of these defeats were huge too — 7.5 inches in rear hip room — but the Crosstrek cannot overcome the HR-V’s amazing 39.3 inches of rear legroom and 23.2 to 58.8 cubic feet of cargo room.

Advantage: 2019 Honda HR-V

  • Huge rear seat legroom boost
  • More cargo space
  • Very traditional interior with upscale options

Advantage: 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

  • Roomier cabin in most areas
  • Stylish cabin
  • Loads of safety feature
  • Standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Subcompact crossovers are never built for performance, so there’s no shock the 2019 HR-V and 2019 Crosstrek have little to offer in this area. The Crosstrek has a bit more pop at 152 horsepower, but its extra heft drags its 0-to-60 sprint time to 9.2 seconds — nearly 1 second slower than the HR-V. This extra heft comes partly from the Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel drive.

Because of the Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel drive, it also gets significantly lower fuel economy than the HR-V. We’re talking up to a 5 mpg combined difference
