Honda Accord Vs. Toyota Camry

By Justin Cupler | July 23rd, 2019

There have been plenty of changes in the midsize sedan segment recently, and the newly redesigned Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are leading said charge. Despite sharing 2018 redesigns, these sedans cater to different crowds with distinct styling. Which of these sedans is better for our Rochester area sedan shoppers? Find out below.

Exterior

The 2018 model year brought in two redesigned midsize sedans that shook up the segment in the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. In 2019, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry remain the same, and that’s not a bad thing.

The 2019 Honda Accord boasts a more refined and upscale look with its flat front end, wide grille applique, coupe-like roofline, and sleeker character lines. Buyers seeking something sportier, there is the Sport trim, which includes 19-inch wheels with black accents, LED fog lights, and more.

The 2019 Toyota Camry boasts a sportier look with a more pointed nose, large grille, thinner wraparound headlights, sharper body lines, and more. Toyota enhances this sportiness with the SE model’s black grille with a sport mesh insert, color-keyed sport side rocker moldings, 18-inch black-painted machine-finished alloy wheels, color-keyed rear spoiler, and single exhaust with dual chrome tips. The sportiness goes even further with the 19-inch black-painted machine-finished alloy wheels, smoke-tinted LED headlights and taillights, and dual exhaust with quad chrome tips on the XSE and XSE V6 models.

The 2019 Toyota Camry is longer than the Accord, but it is smaller in every other key measurable except weight.

Interior

Inside, the more upscale look of the Accord continues with its horizontal dash lines that visually widen the cabin, push-button transmission, floating touchscreen, and peaceful cabin. It also comes with tons of premium tech, including dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, and a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines.

The 2019 Toyota Camry boasts sportier looks with a shapely center console, Y-shape center stack surround, and more stylish dash accents. The interior gets even sportier with its SE trim that add sharp features like leatherette sport seating, paddle shifters, embossed mesh interior trim. The XSE trim goes a step further with leather seating and ambient lighting.

Safety is a focus for the Accord and Camry, as both come standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure mitigation, forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

In terms of interior roominess, the Honda Accord is larger in nearly every key measurable, but the Camry has a slight advantage in front shoulder room and rear headroom.

Performance

Midsize sedans must deliver performance and fuel economy to meet the needs of many buyers, and the Accord and Camry offer plenty of both. The 2019 Accord goes the turbo route with a standard 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 192 horsepower and an optional 2.0-liter turbo unit with 252 horsepower. Respectively, these engines deliver a 7.6- and 5.6-second 0-to-60 times and up to 33 and 27 mpg combined.

The 2019 Toyota Camry has the more traditional four-cylinder and V-6 engine lineup. It starts with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 203 to 206 horsepower and tops out with a 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6. The four-cylinder engine delivers a 7.6-second 0-to-60 time and up to 34 mpg combined, and the V-6 delivers a 5.8-second 60 mph sprint time and up to 26 mpg combined.

Both models also offer hybrid models. The Accord uses a 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor that combine to deliver 212 horsepower. This sprints the Accord to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and helps it deliver up to 48 mpg combined.

The 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 208 horsepower and up to 52 mpg combined in the LE Hybrid trim. In all other trims, the Camry swaps out the more advanced lithium-ion battery for a nickel-metal hydride unit, which drops its combined fuel economy to 46 mpg.
