2020 Honda Ridgeline Vs. 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

By Justin Cupler | August 7th, 2020

The midsize pickup segment gives buyers some flexibility to mix drivability and utility, plus some models offer a unique experience. The 2020 Honda Ridgeline offers said unique experience with useful features like a dual-action tailgate and an in-bed trunk. Is this enough to make it a legit competitor to the work-ready 2020 Chevy Colorado? “Find out below.

Exterior

The Honda Ridgeline has always marched to its own beat in terms of design, as it’s long been a delicate blend of pickup truck and crossover. This continues to show in the 2020 Ridgeline with its Pilot-like design, standard full-size four doors, shorter bed, and overall softer look.

Some traditional pickup drivers may turn their noses up at this softer design, but the Ridgeline isn’t for these types of buyers. Instead, this slick pickup is for buyers who need the roominess of an SUV but sometimes need a small pickup bed.

The 2020 Colorado continues with the same design it’s had since returning in 2015. No, it doesn’t boast rugged look like a full-size pickup, but it has a more upright design that most truck drivers will appreciate. Buyers looking for something even more rugged can move into the off-road-ready ZR2 model, which features more ground clearance and an updated body to maximize off-road capability.

As for sizing, the 2020 Ridgeline has just one set of measurements, as it comes in only one cab and bed setup. It is 210 inches long, 78.6 inches wide, 70.2-70.8 inches tall, and offers 7.28-7.87 inches of ground clearance.

Because it’s tuned more toward the working public, the 2020 Colorado has more cab and bed options—three to be precise. Buyers can get is with an extended cab and long bed, a crew cab and short bed, and a crew cab with a long bed.

These various formats result in a wider range of sizes. The 2020 Colorado measures 212.7-224.9 inches long, 74.3 inches wide, and 70.3-70.7 inches tall. It also offers 8.1-8.9 inches of ground clearance.

As for standard features, the 2020 Honda Ridgeline boasts a new range of trims that eliminates its lesser-equipped base trim. Today, the Ridgeline lineup starts with the Sport trim that comes standard with 18-inch gray-painted alloy wheels, multireflector halogen headlights with automatic on and off, a dual-action tailgate, an in-bed trunk, eight in-bed tie-down cleats, a shark-fin antenna, LED taillights, a class III trailer hitch, variable-intermittent windshield wipers, fog lights, daytime running lights, truck-bed lights, remote keyless entry, and remote ignition.

The simpler and far cheaper Chevy Colorado base comes standard with only the essentials, including 16-inch silver-painted steel wheels, black beltline moldings, door handles, mirrors with manual operation and tailgate handle, a cab-mounted cargo light, a chrome CornerStep rear bumper, daytime running lights, and halogen headlights.

While the wide range of standard features leans heavily in the favor of the Ridgeline, what really standard out are its more unique features. These include the dual-action tailgate that lower downward like any other truck or swings outward and the in-bed trunk that offers 7.3 cubic feet of space to store items out of the elements. It also has a drain plug so it can act as a cooler for tailgate parties.

The Colorado sets itself apart with its rugged-looking ZR2 model. This beast includes a modified front end to improve its approach angle, knobby tires, and a suspension lift.

Interior

A quick glimpse inside the 2020 Honda Ridgeline, and it’s easy to see it’s related to the Honda Pilot. This cabin is 100% crossover with its shapely dash, large touchscreen, soft lines, and more. The only key differences between the Pilot and Ridgeline include the Ridgeline’s lever-style shifter and more trucklike steering wheel.

But with this crossover-based interior comes loads of comfort with it swell-padded seats, reduced noise, and roominess.

Inside the 2020 Colorado, there’s no denying this is a utilitarian pickup with its simple dash design, basic HVAC controls, and T-style shifter. There really is not much going on inside this cabin, and some shoppers may find this a little too bland. While the Ridgeline has rear seats in every trim level, the base Colorado deletes those seats and offers extra storage space in their place.

As for seating room, the 2020 Honda Ridgeline’s front seats come up short compared to the Colorado by 1.3 inches in headroom and 4.1 inches in legroom, but it has 4.5 inches more shoulder room and 3.1 inches more hip room.

In the rear seats is where the Ridgeline’s crossover base helps, as its 38.8 inches of headroom and 36.7 inches of legroom beat the Colorado by 0.5-2.1 inches and 0.9-8.1 inches, respectively.

When looking at standard features, the more expensive 2020 Ridgeline comes loaded with all the equipment buyers want. This includes a 60/40 split-lift-up rear seat with underseat storage, cloth seating, a sunglasses holder, keyless ignition, power windows with one-touch up and down front glass, power door locks, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, rear-seat heater ducts, steering-wheel-mounted controls, tri-zone automatic climate control, HomeLink® remote system, a 200-watt seven-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, MP3 playback, a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, HondaLink®, SMS text message function, a 1.5-amp USB port in the front center console, and a 2.5-amp USB charging port in the center console.

The 2020 Colorado base is far simpler—and cheaper—with its standard two-way manual passenger’s seat, four-way power driver’s seat, 3.5-liter monochromatic driver-information center, six-speaker audio system, black interior door handles, 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, Voice command, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, tilt steering column, power door locks, power windows with drover’s side one-touch up and down, rubberized vinyl floor covering, rear seat delete, single-zone climate control, and two Type-A USB ports.

The Colorado nearly catch up to the Ridgeline in its LT trim, and it offers a great value at under $29,000.

In terms of in-cabin safety, the Ridgeline is one of the safest trucks on the market, according to its IIHS Top Safety Pick status. What’s more, a lot of its advanced safety gear comes standard, including automatic emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines. The Colorado comes standard only with a rearview camera.

Performance

Under its hood, the 2020 Honda Ridgeline has just one engine option, a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6. This engine pairs with a new-for-2020 nine-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels—more evidence of its crossover bones—or all four wheels via its optional all-wheel drive. This results in a 7.2-second 0-60 time.

Those who need to tow, the Ridgeline is happy to oblige with a 3,500-pound capacity with front-wheel drive and a 5,000-pound capacity with all-wheel drive.

The  2020 Chevy Colorado offers three engine options to fit more buyers’ lifestyles. It starts off with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission, gets this pickup to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds, and helps it tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Buyers can move up to a 3.6-liter V-6 with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivers a surprising 6.4-second 0-60 sprint, helps the Colorado tow up to 7,000 pounds.

Buyers seeking serious oomph can get the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that pumps out a modest 186 horsepower but twist out 369 pound-feet of torque. This engine helps deliver a mighty 7,700-pound towing capacity, and it is impressively thrifty at up to 30 mpg highway.
