2020 Honda Accord Vs. 2019 Mazda6

By Justin Cupler | July 17th, 2020

The midsize sedan has been through dramatic changes in recent years, as they’ve gone from OK looking family cars with limited performance to stunners with sometimes eye-popping performance numbers. Two great examples of this are the 2020 Honda Accord and the 2019 Mazda6.

Both these midsize sedans offer great style and performance, but which is the better option for out Rochester area families? Find out below.

Exterior

The Mazda6 received a massive redesign in 2014 that brought the brand’s Kodo design to its resident midsize sedan and pushed it into a new level of premium. This look got a light freshening in 2018 that included new lighting and a few other mild tweaks.

The 2019 Mazda6 carries on with this refreshed look that remains one of the best in the midsize class. From some angles, the 2019 Mazda6 looks luxurious, while others make it look sporty. It truly is an excellent balance of the two looks, but some shoppers may find this look a little too much for them.

The 2020 Honda Accord got its new duds in 2018. This redesign ushered in a more distinguished look for this fun-loving sedan. It boasts a wide grille that flows into sleek wraparound headlights and meets carefully carved body lines that start from the fenders and sweep rearward.

Around back, the C-pillars take on a slower rake, giving the Accord the coupelike look that has become so popular among sedan shoppers. It also boasts the brand’s now-signature C-shaped taillights and available dual exhaust outlets for some added sportiness.

When looking at standard exterior features, the 2020 Accord and 2020 Mazda6 are very similar. The Mazda6 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust with bright outlets, body-color power mirrors integrated LED turn signals, LED daytime running lights, LED headlights with automatic leveling and on/off functions, LED taillights, rain-sensing variable-intermittent windshield wipers, and more.

The 2020 Accord matches all the Mazda6’s standard features, except the rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Advantage: 2020 Mazda6

  •       Sporty and elegant at the same time
  •       Standard rain-sensing wipers

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       Mature appearance
  •       Looks are less dramatic

Interior

Inside, the 2020 Mazda6 takes on more of a luxury-car-like look with its virtually button-and-knob-free dash, knob-style infotainment interface, a dash-top touchscreen, and tons of premium materials in higher trims, including Nappa leather, Sen Wood, and Ultrasuede.

The Honda Accord has a more mainstream sedan appearance with its slightly busier dash, larger air vents, and more. It does, however, show a cleaner design in the center console area with its push-button transmission interface. The Accord has available leather, but never reaches the heights of the Mazda6’s available Nappa leather upholstery.

Standard interior features in the 2020 Mazda6 include a six-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio™ audio system, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, Aha™, Pandora®, Stitcher™, SMS text messaging, carpeted floor mats, cloth-trimmed sport seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an electronic parking brake, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, leatherette door panels and armrests, Mazda Connect infotainment system, an 8-inch color touchscreen, and more.

The Accord has similar features but comes up short here and there. Some areas where it falls short are its 7-inch non-touchscreen infotainment system, four-speaker audio system, single-zone climate control, and urethane steering wheel.

Both sedans put a lot of focus on safety. The 2020 Mazda6 comes standard with low-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with full-speed stop and go, rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera, and forward-collision warning.

The Accord matches all the Mazda6’s standard safety features and adds standard traffic-sign recognition and automatic high-beam headlights.

In terms of roominess, the 2020 Accord is larger in all the key measurables, including an extra 1.1 inches in front headroom, 0.1 inches in front legroom, 3.4 inches in front shoulder room, 0.2 inches in rear headroom, 1.7 inches in rear legroom, 1.4 inches in rear shoulder room, and 2 cubic feet in trunk room.

Advantage: 2020 Mazda6

  •       Luxurious interior design
  •       More upscale materials in higher trims
  •       More standard interior tech

Advantage: 2020 Honda Accord

  •       Tons more interior room
  •       Massive trunk
  •       Available push-button transmission

Performance

The 2020 Mazda6 confuses some shoppers with two 2.5-liter engine options with wildly different personalities. The standard 2.5-liter four-pot produces 187 horsepower and sprints it to 60 mph in around nine seconds, according to estimates. The optional engine is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-pot that pushes the power to 250 horses and 310 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain delivers a 6.4-second 0-to-60 sprint time. Both engines pair with six-speed automatic transmissions and front-wheel drive.

The 2020 Accord comes standard with a 1.5-liter turbo four-pot that produces 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission that ships power to the front wheels for a 7.3-second 0-to-60 sprint.

The Accord’s optional engine is a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic. This powertrain delivers a 6.2-second 0-to-60 sprint with the manual and 5.7-second 0-to-60 sprint with the 10-speed automatic.
