2020 Honda Accord Hybrid Vs. 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid

By Justin Cupler | July 17th, 2020

Hybrid models have come a long way over the years, and two great examples of the great balance of style, performance, and efficiency they offer today are the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Which of these thrifty hybrid sedans is the better option for our Rochester area shoppers? Find out below.

Exterior

The Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid went through recent redesigns in 2018. These new looks revolutionized each model, but they veered down different roads with their new looks.

The Honda Accord Hybrid’s redesign brought in a more refined look that pushed the model toward buyers seeking a premium car but prefer a mainstream nameplate. It boasts an upright nose with a bold grille, a long hood, and a coupelike C-pillar. Down the sides, the Accord Hybrid’s sheet metal is smooth and its character lines are understated, which plays toward buyers seeking that upscale look.

The Camry Hybrid’s 2018 redesign brought in a lower and wider body, which plays well to the new sporty look Toyota gave it. This includes a pointier nose, bold grille options, strong lines and creases, and even a two-tone roof option. Move to the SE trim, and the sportiness increases with its black mesh grille, black 18-inch wheels, and rear spoiler.

In terms of standard exterior features, the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid comes with 17-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, Body-color power mirrors, remote ignition, an active grille shutter, LED brake lights with integrated light bars, LED low-beam headlights with auto-on/off, LED daytime running lights, variable-intermittent windshield wipers, and more.

The 2020 Camry Hybrid matches many of these features with its standard bi-LED headlights with automatic on/off, LED daytime running light, LED taillights, color-keyed power mirrors, and color-keyed door handles with touch-to-lock/unlock feature. The Camry Hybrid does come up short with its 16-inch steel wheels but adds a standard acoustic-laminated windshield to enhance in-cabin quietness.

Interior

The era of wildly styled hybrid vehicles is over, and the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid’s interiors are evidence of this.

The Honda Accord Hybrid boasts a cabin just as upscale as its body would imply. It features strong horizontal lines that visually widen the interior space, a widescreen infotainment screen, a space-saving push-button transmission interface, a clean center stack, and upscale seating options.

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid’s interior is not quite as sporty as its body would lead you to believe. In fact, it takes on a more luxurious look with its swoopy, Y-shaped bezel that wraps around the infotainment screen and shoots off to the right with soft-touch materials and wood trim. Inside the Y is the infotainment system, climate controls, and other interfaces, but when you shut the vehicle off, it all goes to black, giving it a sleek look. Like the Accord Hybrid, the Camry Hybrid also offers upscale seating options, adding to the premium look and feel.

In-cabin roominess goes to the Accord Hybrid, as it wins in just about every key measurable, including front and rear headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room. It also wins in trunk space by 1.6 cubic feet.

As for standard features, both hybrid sedans come well-equipped. T

he 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid’s standard interior features include dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth seating, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a six-way manual passenger’s seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seatback with center armrest, layered wood trim, keyless ignition, power windows with one-touch up/down, power door locks, three USB ports (one 1.5-amp and two 2.1-amp), an electric parking brake with auto brake hold, a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker audio system, Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth® connectivity with audio streaming, in-car Wi-Fi®, and more.

The roughly $3,000 cheaper 2020 Accord Hybrid understandably lacks a few of the Camry’s more advanced standard features, including Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and in-car Wi-Fi®. It also comes standard with just on 1-amp USB port and a four-speaker audio system, but higher-trimmed Accords quickly catch up with and pass the Camry.

Performance

Power is not something hybrid vehicles have been known for, but the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid offer respectable performance considering their impeccable fuel economy.

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid boasts a more traditional hybrid system that includes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor paired to an electronic continuously variable transmission. This setup sends 208 horsepower to the front wheels for a 7.5-second 0-to-60 time. On top of a decent sprint time, it delivers up to 52 mpg combined in the base LE trim. The heavier SE and XLE trims fall to 46 mpg combined.

The Honda Accord Hybrid uses the automaker’s more modern two-motor hybrid system that eliminates the need for a transmission. It uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to ship 212 horsepower to the front wheels. With its extra electric torque, the Accord zips to 60 mph a little quicker than the Camry at 7.2 seconds. Across the board, the Accord Hybrid delivers 48 mpg combined, falling short of the Camry LE Hybrid but beating the XLE and SE trims.
