2019 Honda Passport Preview, Features, and Options
After some teasing, Garber Honda is proud to reveal to our Rochester, New York area buyers the all-new 2019 Honda Passport. It’s been over 15 years since Honda cut ties with the old Isuzu-based Passport, but now it’s ready to bring the nameplate back into its fold.
2019 Honda Passport Design
The 2019 Honda Passport will hit showrooms atop the same 111-inch platform as the current Honda Pilot. What will set the Passport apart from the Pilot will be its 6-inch-shorter body, floating C-pillar, and matte-black front grille.
When compared to the Pilot, the 2019 Honda Passport also has a 0.5-inch-higher ride with front-wheel drive and a 1.1-inch higher ride height with all-wheel drive. This all points toward the Pilots fun-loving attitude and off-road prowess that allows you to enjoy off-the-beaten path driving in the Henrietta and Pittsford areas.
What’s the 2019 Honda Passport’s Interior Like?
Inside, the 2019 Honda Passport shares the Pilot’s basic styling, including its sharp dashboard, digital dash, and advanced infotainment options. What it doesn’t share is the Pilot’s three-row setup, as the Passport has two rows of seats. Though it may not be as roomy as the Pilot, the 2019 Passport leads the two-row crossover class in passenger space at 115.9 cubic feet and interior volume at 157.1 cubes. So, whether you’re hauling the kids to school in Pittsford or picking up clients in Rochester, there is plenty of room for everyone.
In its cargo area, the 2019 Honda Passport offers a spacious 41.2 cubic feet of cargo room. If that’s not enough, you can lower the rear seatbacks an open 77.9 cubic feet of cargo room. There’s even an extra 2.5 cubic feet of underfloor storage, which leads the class.
There is plenty of standard and optional technology inside the new Passport too. In its base Sport trim, the 2019 Passport comes standard with an eight-way power driver’s seat, three-zone automatic climate control, a 215-watt audio system with six speakers and subwoofer, two USB ports, a 5-inch touchscreen, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. The tech features only get better as you move up through the trim levels.
What Powers the 2019 Honda Passport?
The 2019 Honda Passport forgoes the standard four-cylinder engines that are so popular in this class and goes straight for a standard V-6 engine. It shares the Pilot’s standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pumps out 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This potent V-6 ships its power through a nine-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.
Buyers can opt for i-VTM4 all-wheel drive that can send up to 70 percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels. It can also split that rear torque up, sending as much as 100 percent of the power to one wheel or the other. This helps the Passport get out of sticky situations and helps with cornering on dry pavement.
This big V-6 and tough platform allow the 2019 Passport to tow up to 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive and 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive.
How Safe is the 2019 Honda Passport?
The Honda Pilot is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+*, and because the 2019 Passport sits on the same platform, it could boast the same rating. Until the IIHS finishes its crash tests, we can rest our hat on the fact the 2019 Passport has tons of standard safety bits, including Collision Mitigation Braking System™ featuring forward-collision warning, road-departure mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
The 2019 Honda Passport will also feature a standard multi-angle rearview camera with surround view. Optionally, buyers can add rearview camera dynamic guidelines, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection, and front and rear parking sensors.
